How to Clean Floors After Flooding: First Steps for East Tennessee Homes

Floodwater can damage flooring quickly and may contain soil, sewage, chemicals, or bacteria. If a home in Erwin or the Tri-Cities has flooded, safety comes before saving the floor. Avoid entering areas with standing water until electrical and structural hazards have been addressed. Significant flooding usually requires a qualified water-remediation professional.

Document the damage first

Photograph every affected room before moving materials when it is safe to do so. Contact your insurer and follow its instructions. Note how high the water reached, how long it remained, and whether the source was clean supply water, rainwater, or contaminated floodwater.

Remove water and begin drying

A surface can feel dry while moisture remains in the subfloor. Installing new flooring before the structure reaches an appropriate moisture level can cause odor, mold, adhesive failure, or movement. Ask for documented moisture readings and address the source of water before rebuilding.
