Hardwood vs. Luxury Vinyl Plank in East Tennessee: Which Is Better?

Aug 24
1 min read

Hardwood and luxury vinyl plank are two of the most requested floors in East Tennessee. Hardwood offers authentic natural character and long-term refinishing potential, while LVP offers straightforward care and broad room-by-room flexibility. The better choice depends on priorities, not simply appearance.

Appearance and value

Every hardwood board has natural variation, and many homeowners value the way wood ages. LVP uses printed visuals and texture to recreate wood looks with more uniform performance. High-quality products can look convincing, but they do not age or refinish like real wood.

Humidity and moisture

East Tennessee humidity makes moisture testing, acclimation, and indoor climate control important for wood. Engineered hardwood may offer greater dimensional stability than solid wood in some applications. Many LVP products resist water, but waterproof planks do not eliminate subfloor moisture concerns.

Wear and maintenance

Hardwood can scratch and develop patina, yet many products can be refinished. LVP is easy to sweep and damp-clean with an approved product, though damaged boards are repaired differently and cannot be sanded like wood.

Installation conditions

Subfloor flatness, concrete, transitions, door clearances, and adjoining floor heights affect both products. Compare manufacturer requirements and professional preparation before deciding.
